The Certosa of Saint Lawrence
The Certosa of Saint Lawrence is one of the largest monastic complexes in Europe and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. Founded in 1306, it preserves magnificent historic interiors, courtyards, gardens, and impressive cloisters, including the famous Great Cloister, one of the largest in the world. The Certosa is one of the most important examples of monastic and Baroque architecture in Southern Italy.
The Early Christian Baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte
The Early Christian Baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte, located near Padula, is considered one of the oldest Christian baptisteries in the Western world. Its most distinctive feature is the baptismal pool naturally fed by a permanent spring, once used for baptism by immersion. The site preserves ancient masonry, arches and traces of historic frescoes, offering a fascinating glimpse into the early centuries of Christianity in the Vallo di Diano.
The Pertosa-Auletta Caves
The Pertosa-Auletta Caves, located in the heart of the Alburni Mountains, are one of Campania’s most fascinating underground attractions. The visit begins with a unique boat journey along the underground Negro River, followed by impressive chambers, stalactites, stalagmites and a spectacular underground waterfall. The caves also preserve the remains of an ancient stilt-house settlement dating back to the 2nd millennium BC, a unique archaeological site in Europe.
